Eight former racehorses will be showcasing their nimble feet and dancing to music in the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Musical Ride on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 18th October.
The horses, including former Ebor winner Moyenne Corniche and the aptly named Shaydreambeliever, will be performing to a selection of popular music and demonstrating their new dressage talents which they have acquired through training facilitated by RoR.
All the horses and riders taking part are based in Yorkshire and the Musical Ride team has been developed by RoR's North East Co-ordinator, Vicky Smart, wife of racehorse trainer, Brian Smart. The Musical Ride has been meticulously choreographed by Snainton Riding Centre’s Charlotte Wilson, using the specially selected musical sequence edited by accomplished musician and horse lover, Karry Gardiner. The sequence includes music from Queen, ELO, The Beatles, Phil Collins and Tina Turner and tells the story of the racehorse retiring from the track opening with "We are the Champions". The twelve minute routine finishes with a finale "Simply the Best" reflecting the relationship with horse and rider and the great adaptability of so many former racehorses retraining for life after racing. It will take place beside the pre-parade ring at 12:10pm, on the Old Paddock Lawn, and tells the story of racehorses retiring from the track, emphasising and celebrating the relationship between horses and their riders.
Retraining of Racehorses is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing. The parades allow former racehorses to show their ability to adapt to different lifestyles – often being very successful in their new careers.
RoR Chief Executive, Di Arbuthnot, said:
“Everyone involved in horseracing shares a passion for horses. On the track they provide us with so much enjoyment and excitement and it is wonderful that through Retraining of Racehorses or otherwise, former racehorses can find a fulfilling second career. We have over 10,000 horses currently registered on our database as active in disciplines outside of racing, including polo, showing, dressage and eventing, as well as all those happily engaged in hacking and exercising.
"The Musical Ride is a celebration of all the achievements of these former racehorses in their second careers.”
